ASTM A335 / ASME SA335 P9 pipes are widely recognised as chrome moly pipes because of their significant chromium and molybdenum content. These alloying elements enhance the mechanical properties and make the pipes suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure applications.

Chromium plays a vital role in improving oxidation resistance, tensile strength, and hardness at room temperature, while also providing excellent stability at elevated temperatures. When chromium content exceeds 12%, the alloy can even be categorised as stainless steel.

It contains around 8–10% chromium and 0.9–1.1% molybdenum, which provide excellent strength, oxidation resistance, and durability. P9 material is commonly used in boilers, heat exchangers, refineries, and power generation systems.

The equivalent material for ASTM A335 Grade P9 includes ASME SA335 P9 (the ASME standard) and international equivalents such as DIN 1.7385, UNS S50400, and EN 10216-2 9CrMo. These materials share similar chemical composition and mechanical properties, making them interchangeable for critical high-temperature service applications.

Typical treatments include normalizing and tempering. For instance, ASTM A335 P9 pipes are normalized and tempered at approx. 1250°F (675°C).
