A nitinol superelastic bar is composed of a nearly equal atomic mixture of nickel (approx. 55%) and titanium (approx. 45%). Unlike standard metals that deform permanently under stress, nitinol bars in a superelastic state can undergo significant deformation (up to 8% strain) and snap back to their original shape immediately once the stress is removed. Understanding NiTi Alloys: Superelastic vs. Shape Memory

When selecting nitinol rods, it is crucial to understand the two distinct phases:

  • Superelastic Effect (SE): This occurs at a constant temperature. When the bar is bent or stressed, it transforms from Austenite to Martensite. When the stress is released, it springs back to Austenite. This is common in medical guidewires and orthodontic applications.
  • Shape Memory Effect (SME): This is temperature-dependent. The nitinol shape memory bar is deformed while cool (Martensite). It retains this deformed shape until it is heated above its transition temperature (Af), at which point it essentially “remembers” and returns to its original hot shape (Austenite).
