About Tantalum Material

Tantalum (symbol Ta, atomic number 73) is a rare, silver-grey transition metal renowned for its outstanding physical and chemical properties. With a high density of 16.6 g/cm³, excellent corrosion resistance, and an extremely high melting point of 3,020 °C, it is highly resistant to acids and harsh environments, making it essential for advanced industrial applications. Tantalum is primarily extracted from complex mineral ores such as tantalite, microlite, and columbite-tantalite, and is often produced as a co-product alongside niobium, tin, or lithium. It is use in capacitors, high-performance semiconductors, and sputtering targets for computer chips, flat-panel displays, and inkjet printer heads. Tantalum alloys are used to enhance strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance in aerospace components and high-temperature superalloys.

Tantalum has relatively low thermal conductivity (35 W/(m·K)), only 20–25% that of molybdenum or tungsten, and less than half that of iron. Its coefficient of thermal expansion (6.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹) is 30–40% higher than tungsten and about 50% greater than molybdenum

Frequently Asked Questions About Tantalum Products

Tantalum forms an extremely stable oxide, giving it high corrosion resistance, biocompatibility, and reliability. It is widely used in high-capacitance capacitors, chemical processing vessels, and medical implants.

Yes. Tantalum resists attack from both oxidizing and reducing acids, making it ideal for chemical equipment, heat exchangers, valves, and fittings that handle aggressive chemicals.

They are made from sintered tantalum powder coated with tantalum oxide (the dielectric), forming a compact anode-cathode structure. The high surface area of the powder allows maximum charge storage in a small volume, enabling compact, high-performance electronics.

Tantalum is denser, has a higher melting point, and superior corrosion resistance, while titanium offers a better strength-to-weight ratio and lower cost.
