About Stainless Steel 304L Plates & Sheets

Stainless Steel 304 Plates and Sheets are among the most widely used stainless-steel products because of their excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and versatility. Made with 18% chromium and 8% nickel, these sheets and plates belong to the austenitic stainless-steel family, offering durability and good resistance to oxidation in a wide range of environments.

The 304L Stainless Steel Plate is the low-carbon version of 304, designed to minimize carbide precipitation during welding. This makes it highly suitable for welded structures and applications where corrosion resistance in the weld zone is critical. Similarly, the 304L Stainless Steel Sheet provides excellent toughness even at cryogenic temperatures, along with resistance to many oxidizing and reducing agents.

Both 304 and 304L grades are widely used in industries such as food processing, chemical handling, pharmaceuticals, construction, and medical equipment. Their versatility also makes them ideal for fabricating storage tanks, heat exchangers, evaporators, drums, and dairy equipment.

Available in a wide range of thicknesses and dimensions, combine easy fabrication with reliable mechanical properties. With a minimum tensile strength of 515 MPa and yield strength of 205 MPa, they deliver strong performance in high-temperature and high-stress conditions.

304L Stainless Steel Sheet & Plate Finishes (As per ASTM A480)

304L Stainless Steel Sheets and Plates are available in a wide range of surface finishes to meet different application requirements. Each finish type offers unique aesthetic appeal and functional performance, making SS 304L suitable for architectural, industrial, and decorative purposes. Below are the common finishes available:

  • No. 2D Finish – A smooth, non-reflective, cold-rolled, annealed, and pickled (or descaled) surface. It is primarily used where appearance is not critical.
  • No. 2B Finish – A smooth, moderately reflective cold-rolled finish obtained by a final light cold-rolling pass using polished rolls. It is the most widely used finish for general applications.
  • Bright Annealed (BA) Finish – A smooth, bright, highly reflective finish produced by cold rolling followed by annealing in a controlled atmosphere to prevent oxidation and scaling.
  • No. 3 Finish – Identified by short, coarse, parallel polishing lines, giving a uniform appearance along the length of the sheet. Often used in architectural and decorative applications.
  • No. 4 Finish – Characterized by fine, parallel polishing lines for a satin-like appearance. It is achieved by mechanically polishing a No. 3 finish with finer abrasives, making it ideal for kitchen equipment and food processing industries.
  • No. 7 Finish – Provides a high degree of reflectivity with a mirror-like appearance. Produced by buffing a No. 4 finish with fine abrasives, though faint grit lines may still be visible.
  • No. 8 Finish – A superior mirror-like finish with excellent reflectivity. Achieved by extended buffing beyond the No. 7 finish, resulting in a highly polished surface used for decorative, architectural, and specialized applications.

Frequently Asked Questions Stainless Steel 304l Plates/Sheets

SS 304L Plates are widely used in industries like chemical processing, oil & gas, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, marine, and construction due to their corrosion resistance and weldability.

SS 304L Plates are available in a wide thickness range, typically from 1.5 mm to 100 mm, depending on industrial requirements.

The key difference is carbon content—304L has lower carbon (≤0.03%) than 304 (≤0.08%), making it more resistant to intergranular corrosion after welding.

The density of SS 304L is approximately 8,000 kg/m³.

The price of SS 304L sheets in India varies based on thickness, size, and finish. On average, it is competitively priced and slightly higher than SS 304 due to its low-carbon composition.
