What is 304L Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube?

304L Stainless Steel Pipe & Tube is the low-carbon version of the widely used 304 grade austenitic stainless steel. The “L” stands for low carbon, which improves weldability and reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion after welding. The main difference is in their chemical composition and corrosion resistance.

Both types are then heat-treated, pickled, polished, and tested to meet ASTM and international standards.

The difference lies in carbon content:

  • 304 Stainless Steel: Has a higher carbon content (up to 0.08%), which provides higher strength but can cause carbide precipitation after welding.
  • 304L Stainless Steel: Has lower carbon content (max 0.03%), which improves weldability and reduces the risk of intergranular corrosion.
