Introduction to Stainless Steel 310/310s Pipe

Stainless Steel 310 and 310S pipes and tubes are high-strength austenitic stainless steels designed for high-temperature and corrosive environments. These alloys contain approximately 24–25% chromium and 19–20% nickel, providing excellent resistance to oxidation, scaling, and general corrosion.

Key Features and Characteristics:

  • High Temperature Resistance: Can withstand temperatures up to 1150°C in continuous service and 1035°C in intermittent service.
  • Superior Corrosion Resistance: Offers enhanced resistance to oxidizing environments compared to SS 304, making it suitable for chemical, petrochemical, and power industries.
  • Mechanical Strength: Minimum tensile strength of 520 MPa and yield strength of 205 MPa, with elongation up to 40% and Brinell hardness of 225 HBW.
  • Weldability: Can be welded easily using most conventional methods without requiring preheating or post-weld heat treatment.
  • Dimensional Range: Available in seamless, ERW, and EFW forms, covering nominal bore sizes from ½ inch up to 100 inches. Seamless pipes ensure precise dimensions for critical applications.
  • Low Magnetic Permeability: Maintains stability and toughness even under high-temperature operating conditions.
  • Chemical Composition: Contains chromium, nickel, carbon, manganese, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur in controlled amounts for high strength and corrosion resistance.

These properties make SS 310 and 310S pipes and tubes ideal for applications such as furnace parts, heat exchangers, boilers, high-temperature ducts, and other industrial systems exposed to extreme heat or corrosive atmospheres.

Frequently Asked Questions About Stainless Steel 310 Pipe

The main difference lies in the carbon content. SS 310S has a lower carbon percentage than SS 310, which improves its weldability and reduces the risk of carbide precipitation during welding. Both grades offer excellent high-temperature and corrosion resistance.

SS 310S pipes can be welded using most conventional methods, including TIG, MIG, and arc welding, without preheating or post-weld heat treatment.

310 pipes resist high temperatures and oxidation, making them suitable for furnace applications and other extreme heat environments.

They are available in nominal bore sizes from ½ inch up to 100 inches, in seamless, welded, and EFW types.

Common standards include ASTM A312, A358, ASME SA213, and DIN specifications for industrial use.
