What is Stainless Steel 316Ti Pipe?

Stainless Steel 316Ti Pipe is a Titanium-stabilized version of 316 stainless steel, an austenitic chromium-nickel alloy with added molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance. While grade 316 is already known for its superior resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion compared to 304 stainless steel, the Titanium addition in 316Ti offers improved stability at high temperatures.

Titanium prevents the formation of chromium carbide precipitates (sensitization) at elevated temperatures between 425°C and 815°C, which typically lead to intergranular corrosion. By forming Titanium carbides instead, 316Ti stainless steel pipes maintain their corrosion resistance even after prolonged exposure to high heat. This makes them suitable for applications involving elevated temperatures, continuous heat cycles, and aggressive environments.

316Ti stainless steel pipes are available in seamless, welded, ERW, and EFW forms, manufactured under specifications like ASTM A312 and ASME SA312. They undergo stringent mechanical tests including tensile, yield, flattening, hydrostatic, and non-destructive testing to ensure durability and reliability in critical applications.

Key Features and Characteristics:

  • Titanium stabilized – prevents sensitization and intergranular corrosion.
  • Superior corrosion resistance – performs well in severe environments, including marine and chemical industries.
  • Enhanced high-temperature strength – maintains mechanical properties under continuous heat exposure.
  • Good weldability – weld annealing required only in high-stress applications.
  • Improved resistance to acids and chlorides – thanks to added molybdenum.

Frequently Asked Questions About SS 316Ti Pipes/Tubes

316Ti pipes are Titanium-stabilized, which prevents carbide precipitation during high-temperature exposure. This makes them more reliable for long-term use in elevated temperatures compared to standard 316 pipes.

SS 316Ti tubes offer enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion, better creep strength, and improved mechanical properties when exposed to heat, making them suitable for boilers, furnaces, and heat exchangers.

Yes. Like 316L, 316Ti pipes provide excellent resistance to general corrosion, pitting, and crevice corrosion, especially in chloride-rich and acidic environments.

Yes. 316Ti tubes are weldable, but post-weld annealing may not always be necessary due to Titanium stabilization, which prevents sensitization and maintains corrosion resistance.

They are widely used in chemical processing plants, oil & gas industries, marine equipment, heat exchangers, and high-temperature industrial systems.
