About 17-4 PH Stainless Steel Round Bar

17-4 PH stainless steel round bars, also known by trade names UNS S17400 and Type 630, are high-performance, precipitation-hardened martensitic stainless steel alloys. These bars are primarily composed of chromium, nickel, and copper, with added niobium offering a unique combination of high tensile strength, hardness, and excellent corrosion resistance. Supplied in solution-annealed Condition A or age-hardened conditions such as H900 and H1150, 17-4 PH round bars are versatile and widely used across industries that require superior mechanical properties.

They can be welded using standard arc or resistance welding methods and are suitable for limited cold forming, machining, and nitriding to enhance surface hardness while maintaining core strength. 17-4 PH round bars are also valued for their durability, lightweight, ductility, and malleability, making them ideal for high-strength structural and mechanical applications. Frequently Asked Questions About 17 4PH Round Bars

17-4 PH stainless steel can achieve hardness up to HRC 44–50 after age hardening, depending on the heat treatment condition (H900, H1150, etc.).

It has good corrosion resistance, superior to 400-series stainless steels, but less than 316 SS in highly corrosive chloride environments.

It is a precipitation-hardened martensitic stainless steel rod (also known as UNS S17400 or Type 630) offering high strength, hardness, and moderate corrosion resistance.

17-4 PH is martensitic and precipitation-hardened with higher strength and hardness, while 316 SS is austenitic, with superior corrosion resistance but lower strength.

17-4 PH offers slightly higher corrosion resistance and strength in some conditions, whereas 15-5 PH provides better toughness and more uniform properties after heat treatment.
