Sachin Steel Product Banner_22 Sept_009

Nitinol Grade 5 ELI is a low interstitial nickel-titanium shape memory alloy with much lower levels of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen than conventional Nitinol.By tightening control of these interstitial elements, Nitinol Grade 5 ELI components have greater ductility. The alloy has the same superelasticity and shape-memory effect as the traditional Nitinol, and is used when cleanliness of material and high cycle fatigue life are important. Sachin Steel Centre supplies Nitinol Grade 5 ELI wire, rod, bar and custom shapes, material can be supplied to customer-specified transformation temperatures, with full quality documentation, dimensional control and traceability for demanding applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nitinol Grade 5 ELI is an Extra Low Interstitial nickel-titanium shape memory alloy, produced with tighter control of carbon, oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen than standard Nitinol for improved ductility and fatigue resistance.

It is primarily composed of nickel and titanium in a near-equiatomic ratio (approximately 54.5–57.0 wt% nickel, balance titanium), with interstitial elements such as carbon and oxygen held to tighter limits than conventional Nitinol.

Nitinol Grade 5 ELI falls within the base chemistry of ASTM F2063, which covers wrought nickel-titanium shape-memory alloys for medical devices and implants. “ELI” and “Grade” designations for interstitial control and product form vary by manufacturer rather than forming a separate ASTM specification.

Nitinol Grade 5 refers to a shape-memory-oriented, higher-transformation-temperature Nitinol grade, while Grade 5 ELI applies extra-low-interstitial processing within the same base NiTi chemistry to improve fatigue life. The “ELI” designation is about cleanliness and fatigue performance, not a different transformation behaviour.

Yes. Nitinol Grade 5 ELI retains the superelastic and shape-memory characteristics of standard Nitinol; the ELI processing improves ductility and fatigue resistance without changing the underlying shape-memory mechanism.

Nitinol used in medical devices is manufactured and tested to standards such as ASTM F2063 to support biocompatibility requirements; suitability for a specific device should be confirmed against the applicable device standard, surface condition and intended use.
