Sachin Steel Product Banner_22 Sept_004

Nitinol Grade 5 ELI Wire is supplied in high purity nickel titanium alloy for applications requiring excellent fatigue resistance, superelasticity and reliable performance during repeated loading. ELI, meaning extra low interstitial, refers to tighter control of elements such as carbon and oxygen compared with conventional Nitinol. This cleaner material structure makes Nitinol ELI wire suitable for demanding high cycle applications, particularly medical components exposed to repeated deformation. SE508 ELI is a recognised ELI Nitinol alloy used for room temperature superelastic applications. For technical purchasing, ELI should be specified by the appropriate Nitinol alloy designation and required transformation temperature.

Sachin Steel Centre supplies Nitinol ELI wire with mill test certification and supports India wide dispatch and export requirements. Custom wire diameters and transformation temperatures can be discussed according to application requirements.

The active Af temperature depends on the final processing condition. Published SE508 ELI data gives approximately 0 to 15°C for superelastic straight annealed material, while other processing conditions can produce different transformation temperatures.

Chemical Composition of Grade 5 Nitinol ELI Wire

Nitinol ELI wire maintains the nickel-titanium chemistry of conventional Nitinol while placing tighter control on selected interstitial elements.

Element

SE508 ELI Typical / Specified Value

Nickel

54.5 to 57.0 wt%

Titanium

Balance

Carbon

≤ 0.004 wt% typical for SE508 ELI

Hydrogen

≤ 0.0006 wt% typical

Nitrogen

≤ 0.003 wt%

Oxygen

Other Trace Elements

Controlled according to applicable specification

GEESMA reports an average SE508 ELI composition of approximately 55.86 wt% nickel, with substantially lower typical carbon and hydrogen values than its standard SE508 material. These figures describe the cited SE508 ELI material and should not be treated as universal chemistry limits for every Nitinol ELI product. ASTM F2063 provides the broader composition limits for wrought nickel titanium products. The exact chemistry should be confirmed through the material test certificate for the supplied Nitinol ELI wire.

Mechanical Properties of Nitinol Grade 5 ELI Wire

The mechanical and superelastic response of Nitinol wire depends on diameter, cold work, heat treatment and testing temperature. The following published SE508 ELI values provide a practical reference for superelastic nitinol wire tested at approximately 22°C.

Mechanical Property

SE508 ELI

Tensile Strength

>1240 MPa / >179.8 ksi

Elongation

>10%

Upper Plateau Strength

>480 MPa / >69.6 ksi

Lower Plateau Strength

>140 MPa / >20.3 ksi

Residual Elongation after 6% Strain

<0.30%

Test Temperature

22°C ± 2°C

Test Standard

ASTM F2516

These values are published for superelastic straight wire and should be treated as representative material data rather than universal values for every wire size or processing condition.

Nitinol Grade 5 ELI Wire Applications

Nitinol Grade 5 ELI wire is selected for applications requiring repeated deformation, flexibility and high fatigue resistance.

  • Medical: Used for neurovascular stents, guidewires, orthodontic components and high cycle implant components.
  • Aerospace: Used for actuator components and mechanisms exposed to repeated movement.
  • Robotics: Used in compact actuators and flexible mechanisms requiring recoverable deformation.
  • Specialised Engineering: Used where high purity Nitinol wire and reliable superelastic performance are required.
Application Industries

SE508 ELI is specifically listed for guidewires, stents and orthodontic applications because of its low inclusion content, high purity and fatigue characteristics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. ELI means extra-low interstitial and identifies Nitinol material with tighter control of interstitial elements such as carbon and oxygen. SE508 ELI is a recognised ELI alloy designation.

No. Titanium Grade 5 refers to Ti-6Al-4V, while Nitinol ELI is a nickel-titanium alloy. They have different compositions, structures, and functional properties.

ELI Nitinol wire has tighter control of interstitial elements and inclusions, supporting improved fatigue performance for demanding applications involving repeated deformation and high-cycle loading.

SE508 ELI is a superelastic nickel-titanium alloy with extra-low interstitial chemistry. It is used for applications such as guidewires, stents, and orthodontic components.

SE508 ELI superelastic wire is commonly supplied with an active Af around 0 to 15°C. Specific transformation temperatures can be achieved through appropriate processing and heat treatment.

ASTM F2063 is the principal material specification for wrought nickel titanium products. Tensile and superelastic testing can be performed according to ASTM F2516 when specified.
