Titanium Grade 5 ELI wire is another name for Ti 6Al 4V, referred to as ASTM Grade 23. The wire is used in coils, lines, and spools depending on the purpose. The tight control of oxygen and iron content differentiates titanium Grade 5 ELI from Grade 5 titanium, resulting in better properties concerning fracture toughness and ductility at cold temperatures. Grade 5 titanium presents the same content in aluminum and vanadium as Grade 5, possessing the same values of force, but it has lower contents of interstitial elements, making this type of titanium suitable for being used in operating rooms and cryogenic processes instead of industrial production. The tighter oxygen and iron limits in Grade 23 give it better fracture toughness and ductility than standard Grade 5, which reduces the risk of crack growth in an implant that has to perform reliably inside the body over the long term.

Both share the same aluminium and vanadium content and similar tensile strength, but Grade 5 ELI holds oxygen to 0.13 percent maximum and iron to 0.25 percent maximum, against 0.20 percent and up to 0.40 percent on standard Grade 5. That tighter control is what improves fracture toughness and low temperature performance.
