Nitinol Super Elastic Springs are nickel-titanium (NiTi) alloy springs which return to their original shape when a load is removed – they can be used for large deformation without requiring heat activation. There is a reversible phase transformation from austenite to martensite and vice versa during loading and unloading, respectively, which is the cause of this superelastic behavior. These springs are made from ASTM F2063 NiTi wire, and can be fabricated into compression, extension and torsion springs with specified dimensions, forces and transformation temperatures. Medical device mechanisms, precision actuators, vibration control, robots, aerospace components and industrial force management systems are some of the applications for which these systems are used. Sachin Steel Centre produces Nitinol Super Elastic Springs to your drawing, with an EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate to use for engineering, medical device, research and industry applications.

Frequently Asked Questions

A Nitinol Super Elastic Spring is a nickel-titanium spring that can undergo large deformation and return to its original shape after the load is removed.

It works through stress-induced transformation from austenite to martensite during loading, followed by recovery to austenite when the load is released.

It can typically recover up to about 8% strain, depending on the material condition, spring design, and operating conditions.

Life depends on strain, so a lower working strain generally gives a longer life. Send us your duty and we will advise.

Yes, they are used in medical devices and mechanisms where compact size, flexibility, fatigue resistance, and recoverable deformation are required.

Not exactly. Along the stress plateau, the force stays nearly flat over a long deflection, but loading force is higher than unloading force.

A super elastic spring recovers when the load is removed, with no heat. A shape memory spring moves when heated. See our Nitinol Shape Memory Spring page.

Pick an Af below the lowest working temperature, and confirm Af on the finished spring because shape setting changes it.
