Nitinol Grade 1 Rod/Bar is a superelastic nickel-titanium material designed for applications that need high flexibility, elastic recovery, and reliable performance around room and body temperature. The material is commonly identified as NiTi #1 and is used for guidewires, stents, stylets, forming mandrels, stone retrieval baskets and orthodontic files. In rod and bar form, Nitinol provides a solid feedstock for machining, forming and precision component production where conventional metals may not provide the same level of recoverable strain.

Sachin Steel Centre supplies Nitinol products for medical, engineering and other high-performance applications, with material available to required dimensions and specifications.

Technical Data

Specification of Nitinol Grade 1 Rod/Bar

ASTM F2063 is the principal material specification referenced for wrought nickel titanium products used in medical device and surgical implant applications. The current ASTM specification covers bar and flat rolled products with nominally 54.5 to 57.0 per cent nickel. It also states that bar and plate can be supplied in hot-finished or cold-finished conditions followed by annealing or heat treatment.

Industrial Applications of Nitinol Grade 1 Rod & Bar

Nitinol Grade 1 Rod & Bar is useful in specialised engineering applications where flexibility, recoverable deformation and controlled movement are important. Typical applications include:

  • Forming Mandrels: Nitinol rod can be used for forming mandrels where repeated deformation and recovery are required during manufacturing.
  • Damping Components: Superelastic Nitinol can be used in components designed to absorb mechanical movement and reduce vibration.
  • Precision Engineering Components: Nitinol bar can be machined into specialised components where high recoverable strain is required.
  • Aerospace Components: Nitinol is used in selected aerospace applications involving flexible springs, fasteners, and components requiring controlled movement.
  • Actuation and Movement Systems: Its temperature-dependent transformation behaviour can support specialised actuation mechanisms.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nitinol Grade 1 is a designation associated with NiTi #1, a superelastic Nitinol grade used for applications requiring elastic recovery around room and body temperature. Typical applications include guidewires, stents, stylets, forming mandrels, stone retrieval baskets, and orthodontic files.

No. Grade 1 is part of a specific Nitinol numbering system and should not be treated as a universal ASTM grade designation. ASTM F2063 defines requirements for wrought nickel titanium material, while NiTi #1 identifies a specific superelastic grade in the Fort Wayne Metals classification.

Nitinol Grade 1 is associated with superelastic behaviour around room and body temperature. Grade 5 is associated with shape memory behaviour at higher transformation temperatures. The correct choice depends on whether the component needs immediate elastic recovery or temperature-activated shape recovery.

ASTM F2063 currently covers mill products from 5.50 to 94.0 mm in diameter or thickness. Actual commercial availability depends on the required diameter, length, surface finish, tolerance and material condition.

NiTi #1 is commonly used in medical applications that require superelastic behaviour, including guidewires, stents, stylets, stone retrieval baskets and orthodontic files. Material intended for a particular medical device should be specified and qualified according to the applicable device requirements and material standard.

Published NiTi #1 reference data gives an active Af range of approximately 10 to 18 °C. The actual transformation temperature of the supplied material depends on composition and processing and should be confirmed by the applicable test method and material documentation.
